Online couples therapy can be a practical way to start relationship work without adding another commute or childcare puzzle. For couples in Ontario, both partners can meet with a registered psychotherapist by secure video, whether they are in the same room or joining from different private spaces.
This article is general information about the format. It is not advice about any specific relationship, and it is not a substitute for an assessment with a qualified professional.
How both partners join
Couples sessions run through Jane, a PHIPA-compliant Canadian platform. Both partners can join the same video appointment from one device, or each partner can join from a separate device if they are in different locations.
The important requirement is privacy. Each partner needs a space where they can speak freely and where the conversation will not be overheard. Headphones can help if one or both partners are joining from home.
What the first step looks like
The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. It is a short call to clarify what you are looking for, ask practical questions, and decide whether the fit feels right before booking a full session.
For couples, the consultation can also help clarify whether couples work is the best starting point. Sometimes individual therapy, a different level of support, or another service is more appropriate. A good first call should make that clearer.
What online couples sessions can help with
Couples often reach out when communication feels stuck, conflict repeats, emotional distance has grown, trust has been strained, or a major life transition is putting pressure on the relationship.
At Anchor & Bloom, couples work is attachment-based and informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy. The focus is on the pattern between partners, not on deciding who is right.
Session length and fees
Couples sessions are available as 50-minute or 85-minute appointments. The longer format can give more room for both partners to speak and for the work to settle before the session ends.
Current couples fees are listed on the couples therapy page. Psychotherapy is HST-exempt, and receipts are provided through Jane for insurance reimbursement where a plan covers Registered Psychotherapist services. Coverage varies, so it is worth checking your plan before booking.
When online may not be the right fit
Online couples therapy is not appropriate for every situation. If there is immediate safety risk, coercive control, severe escalation, or active crisis, another level of support may be needed first. The consultation is a place to talk about fit and safety at a high level, without going into details you are not ready to share.
Some couples also simply prefer in-person work. Anchor & Bloom offers in-person appointments in Mississauga by availability, and online therapy across Ontario.
